2006 – 11th Summit
Bucharest, Romania
Theme: "Information technologies in education".
Re-election of Abdou Diouf as Secretary General of La Francophonie.
2004 – 10th Summit
Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso
Theme: "La Francophonie: A community that supports sustainable development".
Adoption of a ten-year strategic framework for La Francophonie (2005 to 2014).
2002 – 9th Summit
Beirut, Lebanon
Theme: "The dialogue of cultures".
Strengthening of La Francophonie's political dimension.
Abdou Diouf elected as Secretary General of La Francophonie.
1999 – 8th Summit
Moncton, Canada/New Brunswick
Theme: "Youth".
Systematic integration of a youth component to cooperation programs and institutionalization of dialogue with young people.
1997 – 7th Summit
Hanoi, Vietnam
Theme: "Strengthening Francophone cooperation and solidarity for peace and economic and social development".
Adoption of Francophonie charter: the Charte de la Francophonie.
Creation of the position of Secretary General of La Francophonie and election of Boutros Boutros-Ghali to that office.

A call was made to mobilize Francophones in the field of new information and communication technologies.

Theme: "Unity in diversity".
1991 – 4th Summit
Paris, France
Summit marking La Francophonie's coming of age and expansion.
Creation of the Permanent Council of La Francophonie (CPF).
1989 – 3rd Summit
Dakar, Senegal
Reflection on the institutionalization of the bodies of the Francophone movement and the Summit's follow-up mechanisms.
Creation of Université Senghor in Alexandria, Egypt.
1987 – 2nd Summit
Québec City, Canada
Adoption of a declaration for Francophone solidarity: the Déclaration de solidarité francophone.
Adoption of the symbol of the Québec City conference—a circle with red, blue, yellow, green and purple sections, representing the five continents with La Francophonie member states—as the permanent colours of the Francophone movement.
Creation of an energy institute for La Francophonie: the Institut de l'énergie des pays ayant en commun l'usage du français (IEPF).
Creation of the Francophone Games (held every 4 years) and a Francophone business forum.
1986 – 1st Summit
Versailles, France
Creation of an international follow-up committee: the Comité international de suivi (CIS).
