What is the Francophonie Summit?

The Francophonie Summit (or the “Conference of Heads of State and Government of Countries Using French as a Common Language”) is a gathering of the heads of state and government of member countries in the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF). The Summit is held every two years and is the highest authority in La Francophonie.

Various topics are addressed: international policy, world economy, Francophone cooperation, human rights, education, culture and democracy.

The Summit:
defines La Francophonie’s areas of focus;
adopts any resolution deemed necessary for the effective functioning of La Francophonie and the achievement of its objectives;
elects the Secretary General;
rules on the admission of new full members, associate members and observer members to the OIF.
